Tattoo Aftercare

For optimal results, both the preparation and aftercare of your tattoo are of great importance. Below you’ll find helpful information to ensure a pleasant and successful healing process.

Preparation for your tattoo

• Ideally, start preparing the area to be tattooed about one week before your appointment.
Moisturize the skin daily with a nourishing lotion and make sure to drink 2–3 liters of water per day.
• Well-hydrated skin absorbs pigment more easily, making the tattooing process more comfortable and efficient.
• Avoid sunbathing and tanning beds for at least two weeks before your appointment.

Shortly before your appointment

• Change your bed linens, especially your pillowcases.
• Avoid alcohol for 48 hours before the session.
• On the day of your appointment, avoid coffee and tea.
• Do not take blood-thinning medication (e.g. Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Ginkgo supplements, etc.) for 3–5 days before the tattoo.
• To prevent circulatory reactions, eat and drink something before your session.

Aftercare products

To support the healing process, I recommend using a high-quality tattoo cream.
It keeps the skin hydrated, protects the pigments, and prevents it from drying out.
This helps avoid excessive scabbing and allows the tattoo to heal evenly.
Before your appointment, please get the following products:
• Cleansing emulsion: PRURI-MED Cleansing Emulsion pH 5.5 (150 ml)
• Tattoo cream: La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5+ (40 ml / 100 ml)

Aftercare instructions

On the first day:
1. Remove the protective film applied after tattooing after about 3 hours.
2. Gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and pH-neutral soap. Then pat dry with a lint-free towel (e.g. paper towel).
3. Apply a thin layer of tattoo cream. Normally, no new film covering is needed.
4. Repeat the cleaning process again before going to bed.

General aftercare tips

• During the first week, apply a thin layer of cream 3–5 times a day.
In the second week, reduce to 1–3 times daily.
• In the first three days, avoid soaking the scab too much while showering.
• Never pick or scratch the scabs – they will fall off on their own. Otherwise, uneven color patches may appear.
• During the first 1–2 weeks, wear clean, breathable, loose-fitting clothing to avoid friction.
• For 2–3 weeks, avoid swimming pools, saunas, tanning beds, steam baths, full baths, and direct sunlight.
• Itching during the healing process is normal and a sign of regeneration. Do not scratch – you can gently cool the area if needed.

Important

A fresh tattoo is an open wound.
Make sure that no dirt, dust, or other contaminants come into contact with the tattooed area.

Possible side effects

• Redness, swelling, bruising
• Moderate to heavy scab formation
• Slight asymmetry or irregularities
• Feeling of pressure or tightness
• Allergic or anaphylactic reactions (very rare)
• Infections (very rare)
Please seek immediate medical attention if you notice signs of an allergic reaction:
hives, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, throat, or other body parts.
Do not hesitate to contact your doctor or, outside consultation hours, the emergency medical service or emergency hotline.

Healing stages

Inflammatory phase (1–3 days)
Shortly after the session, a mild inflammatory reaction may occur.
The skin may be red, swollen, and sensitive.
The pigmented area will initially appear more intense and darker due to pigment oxidation.
Proliferation phase (4–14 days)
New skin cells form, and the skin begins to regenerate.
A thin scab often develops and falls off naturally.
Maturation phase (15–30 days)
The skin regains its normal structure and firmness.
The pigments stabilize and become permanently fixed in the skin.
Touch-up phase (after 4–6 weeks)
After about 4–6 weeks, the skin is fully healed.
If necessary, a touch-up session can be performed to perfect or intensify the result.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me — I’m happy to assist you at any time.
